Vegans (for those of you who don't know) are those who don't eat animal products, such as meat, dairy and eggs. For more information about veganism, check out our Why Vegan?, Nutrition, and Resources sections.
The Vegan Society exists to promote vegan diets and to support vegans at the University of Chicago. To this end, we organize regular study breaks with free food and speakers. Additional activities have included cooking classes, potlucks, and other such social events.
We welcome nonvegans to all of our events, of course. Come for the food, and stay to learn about veganism.
Our first-ever "Try Vegan Week" was held in February 2004. In this series of events, we got 180 students to be vegan for a week, and plied them with food and fun. We hope to repeat it this year on an even larger scale.
Our first-ever campaign, "Say No to Veal" (inspired by the nationwide campaign by Farm Sanctuary) convinced Salonica, a restaraunt in Hyde Park, to stop serving veal in 2004.
Our officers for the 2006-2007 school year are: Juliana (jshulman at uc) and Lola (lola at uc).
Our faculty advisor at present is Gidon Eshel.
